Build a funnel: steps, step types and page addresses

Last reviewed October 21, 2026

Set up a guided path, like free guide to thank-you page or sales page to checkout, with the right step for each page.

A funnel walks visitors through pages in order toward one action. When you're done, each page is a step with its own address, and the funnel is live.

Before you start

  • Time: 30 minutes for a two or three step funnel, plus writing.
  • You'll need: a plan for the steps. Two common ones:
    • Lead magnet: Opt-in page > Thank you page.
    • Selling a program: Sales page > Checkout > Thank you page.
  • To sell something, have your product and checkout form ready. See Set up a checkout form.

Step 1: Create the funnel

  1. Go to Sites > Funnels and click Create Funnel.
  2. Choose Start from Blank, Create with AI or Start from Template, and follow the prompts.
  3. Open the funnel: on its card, click Edit (or ⋯ > Edit Funnel). You'll land on the Steps tab.

Step 2: Add each step

  1. On Steps, click Add Step.
  2. Enter a Step Name, like "Free guide sign-up".
  3. Choose the Step Type (see the table below).
  4. Click Add Step, then create the step's page when prompted.
  5. Repeat for each step. The list shows them in order.
Step Type Use it for
Opt-in Collecting names and emails with a form
Sales Page Presenting your offer
Checkout The page with your checkout form
Upsell An extra offer right after purchase
Downsell A lower-priced alternative if they say no to the upsell
Thank You Confirmation and next steps
Generic Page Anything else

Always add funnel pages with Add Step

A page made any other way (copied in, or created by an AI assistant) isn't a funnel step, and visitors get "page not found". If that happens, add a step with Add Step and rebuild or paste the content there.

Step 3: Build each step's page

  1. Click a step in the list, then Edit Page. It opens in the page builder. See Find your way around the page builder.
  2. On an opt-in step, add your form block. On a checkout step, add your checkout form block. Products are set on the checkout form itself, not on the step.
  3. Link each page's main button to the next step.

Step 4: Set each step's address

  1. Select the step and open its Publishing tab.
  2. Under URL path, type a short path, like free-guide or thank-you.
  3. Click Save URL path.

Paths must be unique across your whole workspace. If a path is "taken", an old page may already be using it. Rename that page's path or pick another.

The funnel's own Settings tab sets its Domain and Path. To use your own domain, connect it first: Connect your website domain.

Step 5: Preview and publish

  1. Click Preview Funnel at the top to click through every step.
  2. Publish each step's page in the builder, then make sure the funnel card shows Published.
  3. Point your checkout or form's success redirect at your thank-you step's address.

Get to know the funnel tabs

Map shows your steps as a flow with visits and drop-off. Stats shows Total Entries, Completed and Conversion Rate. A/B Testing, Sales, Security and Events (tracking pixels) are there when you need them.

Check it worked

  • In a private window, go through the funnel as a visitor from the first step's address to the last.
  • For a paid funnel, buy it once with a near-100% coupon and check you land on the thank-you step.

If something's off

  • A step shows "page not found": the page may not be a real step (see the warning above), the page may be a Draft, or the path wasn't saved. Check the step's Publishing tab.
  • The whole funnel went offline: someone clicked Unpublish at the top of the funnel, or Unpublish Funnel on its card. Publish it again.
  • Your edits went live straight away: on a published funnel, the builder saves as you go. Duplicate the funnel to test big changes.
  • The checkout shows the wrong product: fix it on the checkout form's Settings. See Set up a checkout form.
