Create a discount code (coupon)

Last reviewed October 21, 2026

Make a coupon code for a percentage or dollar amount off, limit who can use it, and test it safely.

Coupons let you offer a launch discount, a scholarship rate, or a code for past clients. You'll also use one to test your own checkouts with a $1 real payment.

Before you start

  • Time: 5 minutes.
  • Have ready: the discount, the dates it runs, and any limits (how many uses, which products).
  • The product exists if you want to limit the code to it. See Add a product to sell.

Steps

  1. Go to Payments > Coupons and click Create Coupon (top right).
  2. Coupon name: a name for your own reference, for example "Fall launch".
  3. Coupon code: what clients type, for example FALL20. Or click Generate for a random code.
  4. Coupon type: choose an amount off (for example $50 off) or a percentage off (for example 20% off), then enter the value.
  5. Start date-time: it defaults to now. Change it if the code should start later.
  6. End date-time: set it if the code should expire. Leave it empty for no end date.
  7. Under Coupon usage rules & restrictions, tick what applies:
    • Limit the total number of times this coupon can be redeemed, then enter the number.
    • Limit to selected products on which the coupon can be applied, then pick the products. Searching by SKU is the quickest way to find one.
    • Limit use to once per customer.
  8. Recurring subscription duration: leave it on the default, First payment only. One-time products always get the discount once, whatever you pick here. Checkout forms don't take coupons on subscriptions right now (see below).
  9. Click Create Coupon.

Don't press Escape in the coupon dialog

Escape closes the whole dialog and you lose what you typed. Use the mouse and keyboard as normal, and type values in rather than relying on browser autofill, which the dialog may not pick up.

Make a test coupon

Before clients use any paid checkout, test it with a real card for $1:

  1. Create a coupon with an amount off that leaves $1 to pay. For a $97 course, that's $96 off.
  2. Limit it to that one product and to 3 total uses.
  3. Buy with it in a private browser window, then refund the $1 in Stripe. If your checkout can't take coupons (a subscription, or Stripe Checkout (Redirect)), test at full price and refund right after. See Refund a payment.

Where clients enter the code

Check it worked

  • The coupon shows in Your Coupons with its code, Active, the discount and the limit (for example "8/50 uses").
  • After a test purchase, the uses count goes up by one.

If something's off

  • "Coupon not valid" at checkout: check it's Active, the start time has passed, it hasn't expired, and the use limit isn't reached. If you limited it to products, it only works on those.
  • No place to enter a code on a checkout form: the form is set to Stripe Checkout (Redirect), which doesn't accept coupons. Switch it to Embedded Card Payment.
  • The code works for you but not for a client: test in a private window, signed out. A bug affecting signed-out visitors on embedded checkouts was fixed on October 19, 2026.
  • You want to pause a code: use the on/off toggle on its row instead of deleting it, so you can switch it back on later.
  • A coupon won't apply to a subscription on a checkout form: that's expected right now. Checkout forms take coupons on one-time purchases only.
