Confirm email consent with double opt-in
Ask new subscribers to confirm by email before they're marked as consenting to your marketing emails.
With double opt-in, someone who ticks "Yes, send me emails" on your form gets a confirmation email. They're only marked as consenting once they click the link and then Confirm subscription. It keeps your list clean and is expected in many countries.
Before you start
- Time: 5 minutes.
- You'll need: a form with an email marketing consent checkbox. Double opt-in starts from that box, so it does nothing on a form without one.
- Email sending set up for your workspace. See Set up sending email for your workspace.
Steps
- Go to Forms and open the form.
- On the Edit tab, check the form has an email marketing consent checkbox with clear wording, like "Yes, send me occasional emails with tips and offers. Unsubscribe anytime."
- Click Settings and scroll to Email Notifications.
- Switch on Require Double Opt-In For Email Marketing.
- Click Save Settings.
Each form has its own switch. Turn it on for every sign-up form.
What your subscriber experiences
- They submit the form with the consent box ticked.
- A request is created and marked pending, and they get a confirmation email.
- They click the link in the email. A confirmation page opens.
- They click Confirm subscription. Now they're marked as consenting.
Opening the link alone isn't enough. The extra click stops email scanners and link previews from confirming on someone's behalf.
Tell them to check their inbox
Put a line in your success message or thank-you page: "Check your inbox and click Confirm subscription to finish signing up." Many people miss the confirmation email otherwise.
Double opt-in vs confirmation email
They're separate switches in the same card.
| Switch | What it does |
|---|---|
| Confirmation Email | Sends the person a "we got your form" email. Doesn't affect consent. |
| Require Double Opt-In For Email Marketing | Holds marketing consent until they confirm. |
Check it worked
- Submit the live form with your own email and the box ticked.
- You get the confirmation email. Click the link, then Confirm subscription.
- On your contact record, email marketing consent now shows as confirmed.
If something's off
- No confirmation email arrived: the box may not have been ticked, or the email may be in spam. Check your workspace email is set up and funded.
- The page says the request expired: confirmation links expire after 72 hours. Have them submit the form again for a fresh link.
- They clicked the link but still aren't consenting: they need to click Confirm subscription on the page that opens.
- The page says it's already confirmed: they're done. Opening the link again is harmless.
- Old links don't work: a newer request replaces an older one. They should use the most recent email.
