Set up your website chat assistant
Create a chat assistant that answers visitors in your voice, style the chat bubble, and attach it to your website.
A chat assistant answers visitors' questions on your website any time of day, in your tone, and points them to booking a discovery call. When you're done, you'll have an assistant that knows your offers and a branded chat bubble on your site.
Known issue: the chat bubble stays in Draft
Right now, a new chat assistant's widget can stay as "Draft, not served on websites", and chats show "Widget configuration unavailable." You can build and test everything below. Your widget should start working once the issue is fixed, since it's already attached. See Known issues.
Before you start
- Time: 60 to 90 minutes, most of it gathering content.
- Gather first: your live page addresses (especially your booking page), your offers and prices, who you serve, and a few notes on how you talk. If you're moving a chatbot from another system, recheck every link and price against your new site.
- You'll need: a free discovery call session type, see Create a session type.
Step 1: Create the assistant
- Go to AI Supercenter and click Create Agent. Choose Chat Agent, then Custom.
- For knowledge, turn off business profile and choose to upload documents later. You'll add better content in step 3.
- For tools, choose Book appointments, Capture contacts and Search knowledge base.
- Under behavior, enter a name and short description, set the tone to Friendly, and paste your instructions (what it should and shouldn't do, see the tip below).
- Read the tone line it adds to your instructions. If it says "caller", change it to "visitor".
Good instructions for a coaching assistant
Tell it who it works for, who you serve, what you offer and the price, and where to send people ("Suggest booking a free discovery call at yoursite.com/book"). Ask it to keep replies to two or three sentences, ask one question at a time, and say it's a virtual assistant. Tell it not to give advice outside your practice.
Step 2: Choose the model and booking
- Open the assistant with Edit agent and go to Instructions & Model.
- Pick the recommended model. If a model shows as not approved, choose another one from the list.
- Leave the general-knowledge fallback off, so it says when it doesn't know instead of guessing.
- Go to Actions & Automation and set Booking calendar to your free discovery call.
- Go to Channel Settings and set the booking link to your booking page.
- Click Save.
Step 3: Teach it and test it
- Add your knowledge: paste your services, prices, FAQs and voice notes. See Teach and test your AI assistant.
- Create an AI Personality profile in AI Supercenter > Settings > AI Personality, linked to this assistant: short replies (two or three sentences), friendly, one question at a time.
- Test in Test & Deploy. Ask what you do, what it costs, something off-topic, "can I talk to a person?", and a real client struggle. Check every link it gives.
Step 4: Turn it on and style the chat bubble
- On the Agents tab, turn the assistant on with its power icon. Its chat widget is created at this point.
- Open Chat Widgets and click Edit workspace defaults. Set your colors, the display name in the header, company name, avatar image link, welcome headline, subtitle, first message and offline message. Click Save Widget.
- Open the widget's install settings (Install > Get install code). Under allowed domains, add your domain twice:
yourdomain.comand*.yourdomain.com. If you change any per-widget field here, change one field at a time and click out of it before the next. Each field saves on its own and can clear the others.
Step 5: Add it to your website
- Go to Sites > the website's ⋯ > Settings > General.
- Under Chat Widget, choose your assistant's widget.
- Click Save Settings.
For a site hosted somewhere else, copy the install code from step 4 and paste it before </body> on that site.
Check it worked
- Open your website in a private browser window. The chat bubble appears where you set it.
- Ask it a pricing question and to book a call. It answers from your content and offers your booking link.
If something's off
- Chats say "Widget configuration unavailable" or the bubble doesn't appear: this is the known Draft issue above. Nothing to fix on your side.
- Replies are long or stiff: create or adjust the AI Personality profile. Without one, replies run three to five sentences in a formal tone.
- It gives a wrong price or old link: update its knowledge. Each assistant has its own, so update the phone assistant too if you have one.
- It mentions private pages: don't use the website crawl for knowledge if your site has client-only pages. Paste content instead.
- The bubble shows on other people's sites: add your domains under allowed domains.
