Give certificates when clients finish a course

Last reviewed October 21, 2026

Create a certificate template, issue it to a client for a course, and let them download it from your portal.

A certificate is a lovely way to mark the end of a program, and some clients need one for continuing education or their employer. Each certificate gets its own number and a PDF.

Before you start

  • Time: 10 minutes for the template, 1 minute per certificate.
  • The client is a course member. See Manage your course members.
  • Certificates are switched on in your portal so clients can see them: Learning > Manage > Portal > Features > Certificates, then Save Portal Settings. See Set up your client portal.

Step 1: Create a certificate template

  1. Go to Learning > Manage > Credentials. You'll see the tabs Templates, Issued Certificates and Issued Badges.
  2. Click Create (top right).
  3. In Create Certificate Template, enter a Template Name, for example "Spring Cohort Completion".
  4. Click Create Template.
  5. Open the new template's ⋮ menu and choose Edit Template to add your wording and design.

One template can be used for any course. Make separate templates if each program should look or read differently.

Step 2: Issue a certificate

  1. On the Templates tab, open the template's ⋮ menu and choose Issue to Member.
  2. Pick the Member and the Course.
  3. Click Issue certificate. A unique certificate number is created for you.

Issue it the day they finish

Check Learning > Members or the course's Students tab to see who's completed. Issuing the certificate the same week, with a short personal note, makes it feel earned.

Step 3: Find and download issued certificates

  1. Click the Issued Certificates tab.
  2. Each row shows the member's email, the course, the certificate number and the issue date.
  3. Click PDF on the row to download it, for example to attach to an email.

There's no search on this tab. Scan the list by email or date.

Include certificates in a membership plan

Certificate templates can also be part of a membership plan, on the plan's Credentials tab. See Create a membership plan.

Check it worked

  • The certificate shows on Issued Certificates with a number and today's date.
  • Sign in as a test client (see Test your course like a client) and check the certificate shows in the portal.

If something's off

  • Issue certificate is greyed out: pick both a Member and a Course.
  • The client isn't in the Member list: they need to be enrolled in at least one course.
  • A row has no PDF link: download isn't available for that certificate yet. Try again later, and send us a request if it doesn't appear.
  • You issued one by mistake: there's no undo on the Issued Certificates tab. Send us a request.
  • Clients don't see certificates in the portal: turn on Certificates under Learning > Manage > Portal > Features and click Save Portal Settings.
