Verify a toll-free number for texting
Submit toll-free verification so your 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 or 833 number can text clients in the US and Canada.
Toll-free numbers don't use the A2P registration that local numbers need. They have their own verification instead. Until it's approved, a toll-free number can call but can't text people in the US and Canada.
Before you start
- Time: about 30 minutes, then a wait for carrier review.
- You'll need: a toll-free number in your workspace, plus the same business details and website pages as texting registration: legal name, EIN, address, a contact person, a live https website, and privacy policy and terms pages with texting language.
- Also have ready: a link to (or screenshot of) your opt-in form, and the exact confirmation text people get when they opt in.
Steps
- Go to Phone System > Setup, then click Verification under Manage Phone System.
- Scroll past the A2P steps to Toll-Free Verification. The badge says Not Submitted if you haven't started.
- Pick your number under Toll-free number.
- Fill in the business section: Legal business name, DBA / trade name (if you use one), Website, Business phone, address fields, Business type, Registration number and Registration authority (EIN).
- Fill in the contact section: Contact first name, Contact last name, Contact email, Contact phone and Notification email.
- Add your Privacy policy URL and Terms URL.
- Fill in the message fields. See the table below for what to put in each.
- Leave Messages include age-gated content off unless it applies.
- Click Submit Toll-Free Verification.
What to put in the message fields
| Field | What to put |
|---|---|
| Use cases | For most coaches: Customer care and Account notifications. Add Marketing only if you'll send promotions. |
| Opt-in type | Usually Web form |
| Monthly message volume | A realistic estimate |
| Use case summary | Who you text, why, and what you send |
| Production message sample | A real example that starts with your business name and includes "Reply STOP to opt out" |
| Opt-in image URLs | A public link to a screenshot of your opt-in checkbox |
| Opt-in confirmation message | The text people get after opting in |
| HELP message sample | Your business name and how to reach you |
| Opt-in keywords | For example START |
No link shorteners
Don't use public link shorteners (like bit.ly) in sample messages. They're an automatic rejection. Use your full website address.
Check it worked
- The Toll-Free Verification badge moves on from Not Submitted. Click the refresh button next to it to update the status.
- Once approved, send a test text to your own mobile.
If something's off
- The status hasn't changed: click refresh. Carrier review can take days.
- Rejected: the rejection code tells you which part to fix. See Fix a rejected texting registration, fix it, and submit again.
- Your business name doesn't match: the legal name and DBA must match your official records and your website exactly.
- Looking for consent records? They're on the Consent tab next to Verification. See Collect text consent and handle opt-outs.
