Reward participation with XP, badges and challenges

Last reviewed October 21, 2026

Choose how many points each action earns, create badges for milestones, and run a time-limited challenge with a reward.

Members earn XP (points) for posting, commenting, finishing lessons and more. XP feeds a leaderboard, badges mark milestones, and challenges give everyone a shared goal for a few weeks. Some communities love this. Others find it noisy. Use as much or as little as suits your clients.

Before you start

  • Time: 20 minutes.
  • Decide whether a leaderboard fits your people. For a peer group of leaders, it can be motivating. For clients working through something tender, consider leaving it off and using badges only.

Step 1: Set how much XP each action earns

  1. Go to Learning > Admin > XP Config. You'll see XP Configuration.
  2. Each action has an on/off switch, an XP value and its own Save. The defaults are:

    Action XP
    Post Created 5
    Comment Created 2
    Reaction Received 1
    Lesson Completed 10
    Course Completed 50
    Event RSVP 5
    Daily Streak Bonus 3
  3. Change a value or switch an action off, then click that row's Save. Save each row before moving to the next.

Reward what you want more of

If you want more conversation, give comments more points. If you want course completion, raise Lesson Completed. Keep Reaction Received low, so points come from taking part, not from popularity.

Step 2: Create badges

  1. On the same page, scroll down to Badge Gallery and click Create Badge.
  2. Badge Name: for example "First Win Shared". Required.
  3. Description: what it means, in one line.
  4. Icon URL (optional): a link to a hosted image. There's no upload button, so use an image already online.
  5. Criteria Type starts at XP Threshold. Set the Criteria Value, for example 100 XP.
  6. Click Create Badge.

Step 3: Run a challenge

  1. Go to Learning > Manage > Challenges and click Create Challenge.
  2. Title: short and specific, for example "21 Days of Hard Conversations". Required.
  3. Description: why you're doing it.
  4. Start Date and End Date: check the end is after the start.
  5. Rules: how to take part and how you'll recognize people. Members read them here.
  6. Reward Badge: pick one of your badges, or leave it on None. Reward XP starts at 100.
  7. Status: Upcoming, Live or Ended.
  8. Click Create.

Announce the challenge in your community the week before it starts. See Post, schedule and send a digest in your community.

Step 4: Show or hide the leaderboard

To see rankings yourself, go to Learning > Manage > Leaderboard and pick Week, Month or All time.

Members see the leaderboard only if it's on in your portal: Learning > Manage > Portal > Features > Leaderboard, then Save Portal Settings. Turning it off hides the tab. Nothing is deleted. See Set up your client portal.

Check it worked

  • Reload XP Config. Your values are still there.
  • Your badge shows in Badge Gallery, and your challenge shows on Challenges.
  • After some activity, members appear on Leaderboard.

If something's off

  • "No XP records yet." on the leaderboard: no one has earned XP in that range. Try All time.
  • A value didn't stick: you changed several rows but saved one. Each row has its own Save.
  • Reward Badge only shows None: create a badge first in Badge Gallery.
  • Create is greyed out on a challenge or badge: fill in the title or badge name.
